Description:
Chief James Edgar Davis holds a box with the burning mortgage to the Bide-A-Wee home for women. The mortgage was set on fire by Gloria Swanson, silent film actress. Swanson helped Minnie Barton, home founder, pay the mortgage by sending $100 a month for several years. The group gathered to burn the mortgage in celebration of completing payment on the home set up by Barton to help working mothers. Also pictured are Mary Brill, president of the Big Sister League, Superior Judge Georgia Bullock, and Mrs. Robert Ladd Gifford. Minnie Barton was the second woman to join the Los Angeles Police Department and also founded the Barton Home for girls in 1917. Gloria Swanson was an actress best known for her role as Norma Desmond in the film Sunset Boulevard. James E. Davis James Edgar Davis was Los Angeles Chief of Police from 1926–1931 and from 1933-1939.

Wives of Bliss and Highley also present.

(Left to right) Central Industrial Council (C.I.O.) Secretary C.H. Jordan, rubber union's international representative George Roberts, and attorney for the Unions A.L. Wirin at a city council meeting about an anti-picketing ordinance. Union leaders urged the mayor to veto the ordinance, while members of Southern Californians, Inc. wanted it signed. The issue eventually went to court, where the law was backed months later.

Financier F.W. Leistikow, who, along with his wife Esther E. Leistikow and 17 others, will benefit from a settlement with the County Counsel’s Department after claiming that the county illegally collected taxes on luxury homes in 1939, 1940, and 1941. The claims totaled $32,171.35 and, although the Counsel did not admit wrongdoing, they realized it would be more difficult to protest and decided to pay 62.5% of that amount, equal to $20,117.72

"Prince" Michael Romanoff, popular Hollywood pretender to Russian royal blood, Los Angeles, 1934 (?)

Description:
A photograph of "Prince" (not, as captioned here, "Grand Duke") Michael Romanoff, a Hollywood restaurateur and actor, who claimed to be a member of the Russian royal family. This claim was widely known to be false; however, Romanoff kept up the deception throughout his life in Los Angeles.Romanoff was born Hershel Geguzin in Lithuania. He traveled extensively before settling in Los Angeles and into the role of Michael Romanoff. In Hollywood, he acted on stage and in film, but was perhaps most successful as the owner of the restaurant "Romanoff's" in Beverly Hills. The restaurant was popular for its chocolate souffles, and was frequented by many celebrities. It closed its doors in 1962.

Mayor of Los Angeles, Frank L. Shaw, receives a relative of President Franklin L. Roosevelt, Leila Roosevelt (a.k.a. Mrs. Armand Denis, center), on the steps of City Hall. Miss Roosevelt had just completed a trip around the world by motor, but had broken her arm during her arrival in San Francisco. Her companion and mechanic is Miss Edna Olmsted of Long Island, New York.

Will E. MacFaden (1913-1992) and Robert W. Kenny (1901-1976), pose together as two of California's youngest judges. William E. MacFaden (1913-1992) became the youngest judge in the state of California when he was sworn in as Redondo Beach city judge on July 1934.Robert W. Kenny was a former reporter and one of the youngest judges selected to serve as a Superior Court Judge in Los Angeles. He was appointed on December 6, 1932. He later served as the 21st Attorney General of California.
