Description:
Portrait photograph of Allen Azen, who was imprisoned on a charge of forgery. Azen had struck his head during a jail boxing match, after which he claimed to know himself as Morris Laborwitz, a prosperous insurance salesman from Baltimore. Correspondence from his mother claimed that her son was ill when he went missing in March 1924. Frankie Bailey's autographed apron, Los Angeles, 1925

Description:
Frankie Bailey (Francesca Walters) collected signatures from hundreds of the "great and near-great" during her thirty-year career (ca. 1896-1926) on the stage and silver screen. These signatures were inscribed onto a single apron. Frankie would sew in the signed names to preserve them. Reported in "Bungalow Apron Real Hall of Fame: Actress Conceived Idea at Beefsteak Feast," Los Angeles Times, 6 Dec. 1925: 16.

Little girl with donated goods at the Los Angeles Orphans' Home Society, Los Angeles, 1935

Description:
A little girl, who appears to be around five years of age, sits cross-legged surrounded by canned and dry goods. The picture is taken as she bites into a piece of sliced bread with jam and has made a mess all over her cheeks. She has short wavy hair and wears a floral-printed dress. The child and goods are seated on top of a light-colored sheet, printed with stars. Behind her is a wood paneled wall with a bird of prey painted on it. This girl presumably was one of the many orphans who resided at the Los Angeles Orphans' Home Society, once located at 815 North El Centro Avenue. Every October, the Society organized a donation drive to supplement the orphanage's food stock. At the time, the home was the oldest existing orphanage in the city. Its successor organization, Hollygrove, is no longer an orphanage but a non-profit family and children's services group, which is still located on the exact location of the Orphans' Home.

Description:
Pedro J. Gonzalez had an important role in Mexican-American music of the twentieth century, as both a performer and, to a greater extent, a popularizer of the style. He had a radio program to promote his music and had also used his program to advocate social justice for Spanish speakers in Southern California, and to protest the deportation of hundreds of thousands of such people from the United States. Gonzalez was earlier convicted for raping 15 year old Aphrodite Versus, a ruling he challenged on the grounds that he was convicted on perjured testimony. In Los Angeles, the young victim said she had lied because the city officials had promised to keep her out of reform school if she accused Pedro. The judge refused to admit her affidavit. The earlier ruling was upheld and he was sentenced to 1-50 years after his plea for probation was denied on Nov. 7, 1935. In prison, Pedro served as a translator and de facto liaison helping fellow Spanish speaking inmates and was instrumental in a hunger strike that led to the reforms in theCalifornia penal system. Pedro J. Gonzalez defense committees sprung up throughout the Southwest and northern Mexico. Pedro's family, fans, and the Mexican consul in Los Angeles worked tirelessly on his behalf until finally in 1940, he was released from prison on the condition that he be deported from the United States.

The article states: … W.P. Blake, 53-year-old inventor, was … convicted … of challenging another person to a duel. The charge was brought against Blake by Herman Miller … who asserts he received a challenge from Blake to meet him in Griffith Park, there to fight a duel. … Two guns, exactly similar in appearance, were to be provided, one loaded, the other empty. Miller was to have his choice of the two weapons and the man who received the unloaded weapon was expected to die. … Blake … admitted writing the challenge but … believed it was the only way he could obtain justice. ...
