Description:: Students lined up on the Esplanade on their way into Royce Hall (not pictured). The Physics Biology Building (Humanities Building)--on left--and the Library (Powell Library)--on right--appear in the background. The Esplanade is more generally called Royce quadrangle and is known today as Dickson Plaza. Royce Hall was the center of activity during the mid-February registration for the "second half-year" (Feb. - June) of the first academic year on the new Westwood campus.

Description:: UCLA commencement ceremonies were held at the campus Open Air Theater from 1941 to 1949. This photograph likely depicts the first commencement held on the Westwood campus on June 14, 1941. The Open Air Theater (sometimes referred to as the Greek Theater) was located at the south end of campus where the Public Health Building stands today. The Open Air Theater was bulldozed for the expanding campus in 1952. [Note: Original print is damaged]
