Cynthiabelle Gordon Smith was born Cynthiabelle Black in Americus, Georgia. Her father was Alfred Black and her brother was Junior G. Black. She married the dentist, Dr. Isadore C. Demonstrators protesting the firing of Dr. Opal C. Jones, executive director of NAPP, Los Angeles, 1966

Description:
Dr. Opal C. Jones (1919 or 20-1998) was a welfare activist in Los Angeles. In the 1950s, she was associate director of the UCLA campus YMCA, and a social worker at the Avalon-Carver Community Center, providing service resources to low-income residents in south central L.A. In 1965, she was the founder and executive director of the Neighborhood Adult Participation Project (NAPP), one of the main programs administered by the main agency of the Los Angeles “War on Poverty.” At that time there were almost no African American women working as executive directors. In 1966, Jones sought to separate NAPP from the Economic and Youth Opportunities Agency (EYOA) so that it could be operated for the benefit of the community. Joe Maldonado, executive director of the EYOA, fired her. She succeeded in recovering her position and EYOA was reorganized and decentralized as a result of her efforts. Her distinguished career in public service earned her numerous awards, citations, resolutions and certificates from everybody from the president of the United States to the Los Angeles City Council, which named her Woman of the Year in 1960. Born in Tyler, Texas, she received her BA degree from Prairie View A&M University, her master of social work from the Atlanta University School of Social Work and her doctor of education from the University of San Francisco.

The Hamilton M. E. Church of Los Angeles was formed in 1904. It was originally named the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church and changed the name in 1952 to the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Historically, the church denomination was a trailblazer in their support of women’s professional development and leadership roles in organizing church missions and in the ministry. The church has its roots in evangelicalism, and has maintained that connection throughout its history.

A note on the back of the photograph in the University of Southern California collection reads: Belisi (sic) children brought flowers and danced and sang; Palace of Fine Arts in Georgia; one of most beautiful seen in Russia; was the Palace of the Czars." Bass visited Tbilisi and several other European cities, including Moscow and Prague, in 1950.

Charlie Nelson Gibson was born in Sacramento. His family moved to Oakland in the late 19th century. He was a redcap for the Southern Pacific Railroad from 1913-1954. He and his wife, Maude, had three daughters, Thelma, Lois, and Audrey. Gibson was a member of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Oakland, the Retired Railroad Men's Club, and several masonic lodges.

Certificate of Discharge for Private James Tribble, who served in the Colored Infantry during the Civil War

Description:
Private James Tribble served in the Colored Infantry, Company 6, 66th Regiment, during the Civil War. He enlisted on December 20, 1863 in Vicksburg, Mississippi and is listed as a farmer. He mustered out on March 20, 1865 in Natchez, Mississippi. He is honored on Plaque C-76 African American Civil War Memorial in Washington, DC. He died December 31, 1892 and is buried in the Union Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri.

Across the street is the California Bank building with the dental office of Dr. J. G. Hatcher on the second floor (with his name just visible in the windows).
