Bendera nyekundu nyuma inaandikwa kwa kiarabu kwa rangi nyeupe Ya 'Ali al-Habsh , hili ni jina la mtungaji kutoka Yemen wa kitabu Samtu al-Ddurar ("Kutunga kwa lulu"). Kitabu hiki (uk. 400) kinasomwa sana wakati wa mfungo sita. Kitabu cha Maulidi Barazanji kimefika mapema.<br>ENGLISH: Ustadh Maui is standing together with one of his pupil who is called Jennifer Karstelt who travelled to Lamu together with Prof. Richard Peck. The boy in the picture is his son Fatih. The photo was taken during the Maulidi celebration that people follow with great devotion. In the picture they are close to the cemetery in Langoni. On the red flag behind them it is written in Arabic in white Ya 'Ali al-Habsh, that is the name of a Yemeni author who composed Samtu al-Ddurar ("To compose by means of pearls"). This book count 400 pages and it is widely read during the month of mfungo sita. The book titled Maulidi Barazanji was circulating earlier.

SWAHILI: Ustadh Mau yuko kwenye picha hii kwa boni, kabila ambalo limesauliwa. Ni waislamu ingawa hawajui sana kuhusu dini. Ustadh alikwenda kuwatembelea huko madrasani kwao. Picha inaonyesha alipowaletea wanafunzi wa madrasa zawadi kama vitabu kalamu na paramendi kwa kusoma. Wakati huo walikuwa jamaa ya elfu tatu , wanaishi kwenye vijiji vitano: Bargoni, Mangai, Dede wa rede, Mlimani, Basuba (baina Mokowe na Kiunga, Lamu island West). Siku hizi kuna operesheni inayoitwa Operation Boni Forest kupambana na al-Shabab ambao wanafikiriwa kwamba wako Boni Forest.<br>ENGLISH: Ustadh Mau is amid the Boni people, an ethnic group that has been forgotten. As he puts it, "they are Muslims but they do not know enough about Islam" . Ustadh Mau went to visit them at their madrasa. The picture shows him bringing to them books, pens and candies. Back then the Boni group counted 3000 people. Boni people live in five villages: Bargoni, Mangai, Dede wa rede, Mlimani, Basuba (between Mokowe and Kiunga, Lamu island West). Currently an operation called Operation Boni Forest against al-Shabab is on.

Work on the wall B1/F4 of the Batterie Royale

Woodrow Wilson High School by Paul R. Williams, Los Angeles, 1968-1969

Description:
The current Woodrow Wilson High School campus and buildings were designed by the renowned African American architect Paul R. Williams. It was an engineering challenge to excavate over one million cubic yards of earth to re-grade the hilltop and to use 3,500 tons of structural steel for the main buildings. The new Wilson High was the first LAUSD school to implement multi-floored buildings equipped with elevators and escalators to accommodate students with disabilities.

William Roberts, A. J. Roberts and Frederick Roberts on the steps of A. J. Roberts son & Co funeral home, Los Angeles, 1905-1915

Description:
A. J. (Andrew Jackson) Roberts attended Wilberforce University and Oberlin College. After graduation he taught school, married Ellen Hemings (a granddaughter of Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson) in Chillicothe, Ohio, and moved to California as an early pioneer in 1888. He founded a transfer and trucking business in 1905, sold it and founded the A. J. Roberts and Sons mortuary. The firm began at 12th and Los Angeles, moved to 1119-1121 S. Los Angeles, and to 1415 S. Central Avenue in 1922.

William Pajaud, circa 1968

Description:
William E. Pajaud was an African-American artist known for his paintings exploring themes of jazz. Pajaud was a member of the Society of Graphic Designers, the Los Angeles County Art Association, and the National Watercolor Society, of which he served as president from 1974 to 1975. Pajaud's work was featured in "Now Dig This!: Art and Black Los Angeles 1960–1980" an exhibition at the Hammer Museum.

William Grant Still and Vilem Sokol, 1970-1978

Description:
Vilem Sokol was a Czech-American conductor and professor of music at the University of Washington from 1948 to 1985, where he taught violin, viola, and conducting, as well as music appreciation classes directed primarily toward non-music majors. He was conductor of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra from 1960 to 1988, and principal violist of the Seattle Symphony from 1959 to 1963. [Wikipedia]

William Grant Still and Vilem Sokol, 1970-1978

Whaler Andrew Hicks, commanded by Captain William Shorey 1892-1902, alongside the dock, San Francisco, circa 1900

Description:
William T. Shorey was a late 19th-century American whaling ship captain. He was born in Barbados July 13, 1859 and spent his life at sea. He became the only black captain operating on the west coast of the United States in the late-1880s and 1890s. He obtained his certification in 1885. His whaling voyages were based out of San Francisco. The "John and Winthrop" was the only whaling ship in the world to be manned entirely by an African-American crew. Shorey retired from whaling in 1908 (Wikipedia). A street in west Oakland, where Shorey lived, is named after him.

Westwood, (Linde) Medical Plaza by Paul R. Williams, Los Angeles, circa 1961

Description:
The Westwood (Linde) Medical Plaza, is a 12 story office building used for medical and dental procedures. Coined the “classic Modern-era style with a tall vertical mass of the building set against a long, horizontal mass.” Morris Linde was the head of the development and construction company that built the building. With other building design/construction collaborations, Linde and Williams, helped to change the face of Los Angeles County.

Dr. Vada Somerville (born Vada Jetmore Watson) of Pomona graduated from USC, married dentist John Alexander Somerville (1912), was the first African American woman and the second African American person to graduate from USC School of Dentistry (1918), and was the first African American woman certified to practice dentistry in the state of California. She was a civil rights activist, highly involved in several civic and community organizations.

Description:
The Watts Riot, 1965, Los Angeles, sometimes referred to as the Watts Rebellion, took place in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles from August 11 to 16, 1965. On August 11, 1965, Marquette Frye, an African-American motorist on parole for robbery, was pulled over for reckless driving. A minor roadside argument broke out, and then escalated into a fight with police. The riots were blamed principally on police racism.

The poet sitting on the right-hand side is Ahmed Msallam, a famous poet using Kibajuni language in his works.

Vivian Osborne Marsh and three others at a formal event, 1950-1970

Description:
Vivian Osborne Marsh was born in Houston, Texas, and received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley. She founded the Berkeley campus’ Kappa Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She went on to found several other chapters. Two major projects that she organized were the Traveling Library, which provided books to rural portions of Georgia, and Teen Lift, which provided opportunities for underprivileged teenagers to visit events such as symphonies and operas. She was involved in many civic organizations. On February 21, 1981, the mayor of Berkeley honored her contributions by declaring it to be Vivian Osborne Marsh Day.

Les traces trouvées dans la dernière chambre du Quartier des Officiers montre que des travaux étaient en cours pour la relier au Palais du Gouverneur quand la construction de la Citadelle s’est arrêtée a la mort du Roi Christophe. Nous n’avons pas de trace de comment elle était couverte. Il a été décidé d’utiliser une structure de style moderne conçue par François Emain compagnon de l’équipe de l’UNESCO.
