Description:
Cynthiabelle Gordon Smith was born Cynthiabelle Black in Americus, Georgia. Her father was Alfred Black and her brother was Junior G. Black. She married the dentist, Dr. Isadore C. Mitchell (April 30, 1925). Shortly after, he completed dental school at Howard University and then moved to Los Angeles. In 1934, she moved to Washington, D.C. seeking work, and divorced Mitchell in 1936. In 1937 she was working for the U. S. Public Health Service in Washington, D. C. She married the physician Dr. Wilbur Gordon (possibly in 1942) and was widowed. She married Dr. R. Stillman Smith in 1947.

Residence of Colonel Allen Allensworth, Los Angeles, 1906

Description:
Allen Allensworth was born into slavery in Kentucky, served as a Union soldier, became a Baptist minister and educator, and was the first African American to reach the rank of lieutenant colonel. He founded numerous churches, and in 1908 founded Allensworth, California, the only town in the state to be founded, financed and governed by African Americans, now a State Historic Monument. She was a civil rights activist, highly involved in several civic and community organizations.

William Pajaud, circa 1968

Description:
William E. Pajaud was an African-American artist known for his paintings exploring themes of jazz. Pajaud was a member of the Society of Graphic Designers, the Los Angeles County Art Association, and the National Watercolor Society, of which he served as president from 1974 to 1975. Pajaud's work was featured in "Now Dig This!: Art and Black Los Angeles 1960–1980" an exhibition at the Hammer Museum.

Phillips Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Los Angeles, 1963

Description:
Phillips Temple C. M. E. Church was established in 1915. The Christian Methodist Episcopal (C.M.E.) Church is a historically black denomination within the broader context of Methodism. It's also occasionally considered to be a mainline denomination. The group was organized on December 16, 1870 in Jackson, Tennessee, by several black ministers, with the full support of their white sponsors. They called this fellowship the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in America, which it remained until their successors adopted the current name in the 1950s.

Kenneth Hahn (1920–1997) was a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for forty years, from 1952 to 1992. Hahn was on the Los Angeles City Council from 1947 to 1952. He was an ardent supporter of civil rights throughout the 1960s, and met Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1961.

Biddy Mason was brought to California as a slave in a wagon train. She petitioned for her freedom, and a judge granted it to her and her family in 1856. She and her family lived with Robert Owens, Sr., when she first moved to Los Angeles. Her daughter Ellen married Robert Owen's son Charles.

Certificate of Discharge for Private James Tribble, who served in the Colored Infantry during the Civil War

Description:
Private James Tribble served in the Colored Infantry, Company 6, 66th Regiment, during the Civil War. He enlisted on December 20, 1863 in Vicksburg, Mississippi and is listed as a farmer. He mustered out on March 20, 1865 in Natchez, Mississippi. He is honored on Plaque C-76 African American Civil War Memorial in Washington, DC. He died December 31, 1892 and is buried in the Union Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri.

Description:
Vivian Osborne Marsh was born in Houston, Texas, and received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley. She founded the Berkeley campus’ Kappa Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She went on to found several other chapters. Two major projects that she organized were the Traveling Library, which provided books to rural portions of Georgia, and Teen Lift, which provided opportunities for underprivileged teenagers to visit events such as symphonies and operas. She was involved in many civic organizations. On February 21, 1981, the mayor of Berkeley honored her contributions by declaring it to be Vivian Osborne Marsh Day.

Description:
Elmer Bartlett was a highly acclaimed choir director and organist. Churches where he worked in include the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Los Angeles. He received several awards in the course of his career including first prize for directing the Los Angeles AME's choir at a 1926 choir competition at the Hollywood Bowl. By 1940 he had moved to Elgin Illinois. He continued to direct choirs and play the organ for various A.M.E. churches.

Vilem Sokol was a Czech-American conductor and professor of music at the University of Washington from 1948 to 1985, where he taught violin, viola, and conducting, as well as music appreciation classes directed primarily toward non-music majors. He was conductor of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra from 1960 to 1988, and principal violist of the Seattle Symphony from 1959 to 1963. [Wikipedia]

Santa Susana Pass, east side, Los Angeles County, circa 1895

Description:
The Santa Susana Pass is a low mountain pass in the Simi Hills of Southern California, connecting San Fernando Valley to Simi Valley. It was used by Native American tribes for around 8,000 years. Use by Europeans started with the Portola Expedition (1769-1770), by Franciscans to travel from the San Fernando Mission the San Buenaventura, and by San Fernando rancheros after 1834 secularization. A wagon trail was created, and, in 1917, a road was built.
