Description:
Roberta Smythe, Aimee Semple McPherson, and Rheba Crawford Splivalo celebrate the 25th anniversary of McPherson's work in ministry. The celebration included a parade that ended at the City Hall steps where McPherson greeted approximately 5000 people and the Mayor. Aimee Semple McPherson was a Los Angeles evangelist in the 1920s and 1930s who founded the Foursquare Church and Angelus Temple. Rheba Crawford Splivalo was associate pastor at Angelus Temple. Roberta Semple Smythe was the daughter of Aimee Semple McPherson.

Evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson with her former nurse Ella Nordin and her business manager Giles Knight in the office of attorney Arndt. McPherson's former attorney Jacob Moidel had pressed a suit against her accusing her of illegally discharging him, which she contended with accusations that Moidel had attempted to force her to resign from her position at her church. Nordin and Knight were to give testimony about threatening messages received from Moidel.

This appearance is possibly related to her testifying in her own defense in a breach of contract suit regarding a film, "Clay in the Potter's Hands", in which she was to appear. The film's producer, J. Roy Stewart, died before the trial was completed, but the suit was found in his favor and McPherson ordered to pay $5900 to assignees of his interest in the contract. The trial took place in January of 1934.

Description:
(left to right) Attorney Joseph Scott, Angelus Temple business manager Giles Knight, Angelus Temple founder and pastor Aimee Semple McPherson, and Rolf Kennedy McPherson, son of Aimee. All are at a trial in which Aimee's daughter Roberta Semple has brought a $150,000 slander suit against Willedd Andrews, attorney for Aimmee McPherson and Angelus Temple. Miss Semple claims that Andrews had made untrue statements about her, including that Semple and her husband Jacob Moidel (former Temple attorney) had kidnapped Aimee and forced her to sign several documents. Joseph Scott acted as attorney for Andrews while Rolf and Aimee McPherson stood as witnesses. Roberta Semple was ultimately offered $2000 in damages. This trial was the latest in a series of tumultuous family relations which began with Aimee's decision to retain Giles Knight as business manager against Roberta's wishes

Photograph of the affidavit of H. D. Hollenbeck, dual resident of Los Angeles and Welton, Arizona, given in concurrence with Aimee Semple McPherson's disappearance/kidnapping. The document puts forward Hollenbeck's sworn account of his whereabouts from May 18, 1926 through July 10, 1926. The document is dated July 10, 1926 and is signed by both H. D. On May 18, 1926, Christian evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson disappeared from Venice Beach, California after going for a swim. She reappeared in Mexico five weeks later, stating she had escaped from kidnappers holding her for ransom there. Her disappearance, reappearance and subsequent court inquiries regarding the allegation that the kidnapping story was a hoax carried out to conceal a tryst with a lover precipitated a media frenzy that changed the course of McPherson's career.
