Description:
Adobe hut in the Sonora desert. In 1926 the Evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson disappeared from Ocean Park Beach. A search ensued. When she finally re-appeared in Arizona, weeks later, she claimed that she had been abducted and taken to a a hut in Mexico, from which she eventually escaped.

Photograph of the affidavit of H. D. Hollenbeck, dual resident of Los Angeles and Welton, Arizona, given in concurrence with Aimee Semple McPherson's disappearance/kidnapping. The document puts forward Hollenbeck's sworn account of his whereabouts from May 18, 1926 through July 10, 1926. The document is dated July 10, 1926 and is signed by both H. D. Hollenbeck and a Notary Public for the County of Los Angeles.

Description:
Noted evangelist and founder of the Angelus Temple and the Foursquare Church, Aimee Semple McPherson, appears in court. This appearance is possibly related to her testifying in her own defense in a breach of contract suit regarding a film, "Clay in the Potter's Hands", in which she was to appear. The film's producer, J. Roy Stewart, died before the trial was completed, but the suit was found in his favor and McPherson ordered to pay $5900 to assignees of his interest in the contract. The trial took place in January of 1934.

Roberta Smythe, Aimee Semple McPherson, and Rheba Crawford Splivalo celebrate the 25th anniversary of McPherson's work in ministry. The celebration included a parade that ended at the City Hall steps where McPherson greeted approximately 5000 people and the Mayor. Aimee Semple McPherson was a Los Angeles evangelist in the 1920s and 1930s who founded the Foursquare Church and Angelus Temple. Rheba Crawford Splivalo was associate pastor at Angelus Temple. Roberta Semple Smythe was the daughter of Aimee Semple McPherson.

In 1926 evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson disappeared from Venice Beach in California for 5 weeks. She emerged in Mexico, claiming to have been kidnapped. A grand jury investigation indicated that she had actually been staying with a former employee, Kenneth Ormiston. The case against McPherson was finally dismissed.

These groups were located in Burbank and in Santa Ana. On May 18, 1926, Christian evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson disappeared from Venice Beach, California after going for a swim. She reappeared in Mexico five weeks later, stating she had escaped from kidnappers holding her for ransom there. Her disappearance, reappearance and subsequent court inquiries regarding the allegation that the kidnapping story was a hoax carried out to conceal a tryst with a lover precipitated a media frenzy that changed the course of McPherson's career.
