Description:
The day after the death of Los Angele Times columnist Harry Carr, members of the Mexican community gathered at Olvera Street to recite the rosary and litany, after which Consuela Castillo De Bonzo and Zacarias Hernandez placed a memorial wreath on the Philip de Neve cross on Olvera Street. Carr had been a champion of Olvera Street.

Description:
View of a temporary altar draped with a white cloth, arranged with mementos for the Olvera Street memorial service for Los Angles Times columnist, Harry Carr. The altar holds a photograph of Harry Carr, a Crucifix and rosary, two burning candles, a black wreath and three books written by Harr Carr: Old Mother Mexico (1931), The West is Still Wild (1932) and Los Angeles: City of Dreams (1935). The altar is flanked by two small tables holding potted flowers and a potted fern. In front of the altar are a potted poinsettia and a pine branch wreath. The painted prick wall behind the altar has a ledge, above which is an image of the Virgin Mary, flowers and more lit candles. A doorway with a curtain is on the left.

The Chito Montoya stringed orchestra plays in the foreground and singers face a microphone (for radio KMTR), in the center. It is draped with a black wreath and black-rimmed photograph of Mr. Carr bearing the farewell "Vaya Va Con Dios." Ernesto A. Romero, Vice-Culsul for Mexico in Los Angeles, wears a trench coat and glasses (right). In front of him in a black lace veil and holding a sheet of music is Consuela de Bonzo, a Mexican community leader (owner of the restaurant Casa La Golondrina at 17 Olvera St.).

Description:
Mourners pray at a temporary altar at the Olvera Street memorial service for Los Angeles Times columnist Harry Carr. The altar contains a small statue of the Virgin Mary and a Crucifix. Six women and one man kneel and five men stand in prayer, holding lit candles. A painted brick wall has more lit candles on its ledge and the lower portion of an image of the Virgin Mary is also visible. A table with a checked table cloth on the right suggests that the location might be a restaurant (perhaps Casa La Golondrina at 17 Olvera St., owned by Consuela De Bonzo, a Mexican community leader who spoke at the service).

About the subjects:Harry Carr was a reporter, editor and columnist with the Times for almost all of his career. He was given an honorable mention by a Pulitzer Prize committee on awards. After he died of a heart attack at age fifty-eight, his funeral was attended by more than a thousand people. Lanier Bartlett wrote for the Times and also wrote film scripts. Mabel Brigham was a Times society editor. Edward F. Dishman joined the Times as the night city editor after his 1897 arrival in Los Angeles, and later became the Los Angeles Chief of Police. John A. Gray joined with the Times in 1899, went on to the Hearst newspaper and in 1931 became the executive secretary of the Municipal Light and Power Defense League. W. R. Greenwood was a rancher and a reporter for the Times from 1893 to 1911. Frank Greaves joined the Times editorial staff some time after his arrival in Los Angeles in 1890 and started a printing business in 1910. John von Blon was an editor at the Times for 17 years. Julian Johnson joined the Times in the early 1900's and was the drama critic by 1911. After other journalism positions in New York, he returned to Los Angeles to write for film. William S. Livengood was with the Times from 1895 to 1907 as police, courthouse and City Hall reporter, telegraph editor, and contest manager.A. M. Row was an editor at the Los Angeles Times from 1897 to 1912. His work as editor of the church department earned him the nickname "The Deacon." He also wrote Los Angeles Times articles on topics of religion, and hiking and camping. In addition to her articles for the Times, Constance Lindsay Skinner wrote for papers in Canada, Chicago and New York. She also published children's books.
