Description:
Photograph of Ronald Mansbridge, representative of the Cambridge University Press, with the Rare Book Exhibition at the downtown Central Library of the Los Angeles Public Library. In the display case there are some photos of old portraits, some rare books, and two informational signs in English. The small paper on the top reads, “Four centuries of printing, An exhibition of books printed at the University Press, Cambridge, England,” and the large panel underneath reads, “Cambridge University Press, In Past Centuries, Books by Erasmus, Newton, Harvey, Donne, Gray, Milton, King Hames I. In recent times, Kelvin, Jebb, ‘Q’, Jeans, Eddington, Rutherford, Whitehead. 1521-1931”.

Virginia Bruce Gilbert contemplates the attempted kidnapping of her child, Los Angeles, 1936

Description:
Parts of the note she is holding can be read. It states, “…if Miss Bruce were in town. She asked…address and telephone number and also stated she was in….and miss Bruce is in great danger. Miss Hall asked…in regard to a child and she stated ‘Yes, in regard to…’…(referring to SUSIE ANN GILBERT, daughter of Miss Bruce)…Mr. Moore states that Miss Hall was given to believe that this warning of a kidnap attempt of Miss Bruce’s child, SUSIE ANN GILBERT”.

Description:
Billy Conn, boxer and actor, and his new wife, Mary Louise Conn (née Smith) on a train. At this time Billy Conn was filming for "The Pittsburgh Kid," formerly "Kid Tinsel." This was also a combination honeymoon trip. Billy wears a double breasted suit. Mary Louise wears a light-colored dress with a buttoned ruffle down the whole front length and a dark large-brimmed hat.

Ransom note sent to Perry M. Parker, father of kidnap victim Marion Parker, from William Edward Hickman, Los Angeles, 1927

Description:
Marion Parker was kidnapped for ransom on December 15, 1927 by William Edward Hickman. Two days later, Marion's remains were found by her father, Perry Parker, on the lawn of 432 S. Manhattan Place- just moments after exchanging $1500 for Marion, whom he presumed to be alive. Hickman was ultimately tried and sentenced to death for the crime. He was executed at San Quentin, October 19, 1928.
