Qur’ān [MS 1656/10]

Description:
Fragment containing parts or all of four short chapters 84 to 87, including: verses 16 to 25 of al-inshiqāq (The sundering), all of al-Burῡj (The mansions of the stars), all of al-Ṭāriq (The morning star), and verses 1 through 14 and the first two words of verse 15 from al-A̒alá (The most high).

Rouse MS 15. CHOIR BOOK in Czech (?), 4 fragments.

Description:
Music:Prague notation on five-line staffs inked in red. Using the punctum, pes, clivis(?), plica(?) or other liquescent, and other unidentified ligatures. Pitch given by F letter clefs on the third or fourth line of each staff (where visible). A B-flat accidental appears on fragment 1; as the clef has been obscured, it is not possible to say with certainty what pitch it modifies, but it is most likely an E-flat or B-flat. The large size of both notation and text as well as the low register of the chant melodies indicates that the original manuscript was indeed intended for choral performance. Undoubtedly produced in or near Prague due to the distinctive regional notation; the rhomb-shaped noteheads are characteristic of the city’s medieval sign system.

Description:
Written in Italy in the second half of the thirteenth century, a fragment from a pocket-size sermon book produced by its user, judging by its inexpert script, simplicity of design and execution, and the poor quality of the parchment. Bought from Bernard Rosenthal (his MS 62, in pencil on inside of front cover) in August 1988 by Richard and Mary Rouse. Given to UCLA in 2005.

Description:
Written in Germany in the middle of the fifteenth century, to judge from script, decoration, and the latest watermark; the copying, and perhaps the composition, are the owner’s. Acquired by Bernard Rosenthal, San Francisco, in or before 1983 (his no. 53, folio 1); bought from Rosenthal in March 1988 by Richard and Mary Rouse. Given to UCLA in 2005.

Description:
Manuscript document on vellum, written in several Romanesque bookhands in 3 columns on both sides of single leaf. Notary signs. 590x 422 mm.An official record of land donations left in wills to the church of San Juan Batista de Calavario near Montenegro in the province of La Coruña, Spain. By far the greatest proposition of gifts come from the Froilaz family and were left between the years 1076 and 1153. Includes are seventeen separate donations.Neither the church, nor the town exit today and the only means of localizing the donations are the mention of the rivers Eume and Lara (i.e. Ladra), both in northeastern La Coruña. Froilaz (Froilan or Froila) was the name of 3 kings of Asturia and a bishop of Leon, and so must have ben closely related to this region.

Byron McAfee Papers, circa 1553-1964

Description:
McAfee was born in Houston, Texas, in 1883; emigrated to Mexico in 1906 as employee of the Compañía Mexicana de Peteo El Aguila, S.A.; began studying the Nahuatl language in 1907 under John H. Cornyn with whom he jointly authored several studies; after Cornyn's death in 1941, McAfee collaborated with Angel María Garibay K. and Robert H. Barlow; became an acknowledged expert in Nahuatl studies and published widely.Byron McAfee (1883-1966) was born in Houston, Texas, and emigrated to Mexico in 1906 as an employee of the Compañía de Petróleos El Aguila. Shortly thereafter, he joined a Nahuatl study group at the Benjamin Franklin Library in Mexico City where he made contacts with scholars such as Robert Barlow, Miguel Leon Portilla, John H. Cornyn and Doña Luz Jimenez (a noted native Nahuatl consultant, also known as Julia Jimenez Gonzalez). McAfee became known as a prolific ethnohistorian and Nahuatl linguist through his research collaborations with Cornyn, and publications of several studies. After Cornyn's death in 1941, McAfee collaborated with noted scholars such as Angel María Garibay K. and Robert H. Barlow, and maintained friendships with Mexican intellectuals such as Alfonso Caso and Manuel Gamio.
