Photograph of a hand-drawn diagram that depicts Aimee Semple McPherson's account of her escape from her kidnappers in Sonora, Mexico. A dotted line, representing the U.S./Mexico border, extends across the upper third of the image. Below, the Sonoran town of Agua Prieta and its surroundings are depicted. Above the dotted line, Douglas, Arizona is represented. Notations and scale markers are also included in the diagram. A compass rose sits in the upper right corner. Description:
One of several related photographs housed in this negative sleeve that document the process of phototelegraphy -the process of transmitting photographic images over telephone wire. Though there were advancements - namely the Telediagraph, the Belinograph, and the Telephotograver (invented by Los Angeles Times managing editor Ralph Trueblood) – the technology left much room for improvement. In the 1930s, the Associated Press began working with Kodak to perfect the technology. On January 1, 1935, the AP sent the first photograph out over its Wirephoto service to 47 affiliated newspapers across the United States.

In 1954, a contractual agreement was made between General Petroleum and the Santa Monica City Council in which the oil concern was granted a 10-year lease on Santa Monica tidelands. General Petroleum offered the city $500,000 and 35% royalties from recovered oil. The contract was dependent on a voter referendum that would change pre-existing city ordinances, thus allowing for oil drilling in city-owned tidelands. The amendment proposal lost by a 3:1 margin.
