Description:
14-year-old Mildred Douglas, who, along with friend Donna (or Zelia K.) Thompson, was reported missing. A young girl reported seeing them get into a car with 31-year-old H. B. Millard. When called in for questioning Millard testified that he did pick up Douglas and Thompson but dropped them off when he realized how young they were. Millard reported that the girls told him they were running away from home. Girls fitting the description of Douglas and Thompson were seen in an Ontario auto camp one day later.

200-inch, 20-ton lens for the future Hale Telescope, after its arrival in Pasadena, CA. Circa April 10, 1936.

Description:
The 20-ton, 200-inch lens for what would be the Hale Telescope after its arrival in Pasadena, CA, following a cross-country rail trip from Corning, NY. The giant waffle-patterned lens was made from Pyrex, then a new material, by the Corning Glass Works company. Astronomer George Ellery Hale, one of the founders of the California Institute of Technology, secured a $6 million grant from the Rockefeller Institute to build both an observatory and a telescope with a 200-inch primary mirror, to be administered through Cal Tech. Hale built his observatory on Mt. Palomar in San Diego County, 90 miles southeast from the Mt. Wilson observatory in Pasadena, which Hale had also founded in 1904. Construction of the Hale telescope was delayed by World War II, and the telescope did not see its first light until January 26, 1949. George Hale died in 1938, and thus did not see the telescope that bears his name completed.

1835 Mexican decree establishing Los Angeles as capital of Alta California, Los Angeles, 1935

Description:
Referenced in more recent article, "Dusting Off the Pages From California's Past," [Los Angeles Times, September 28, 1983]. There is no related article from photograph's time period. This more recent column references the image's subject as part of the Los Angeles Public Library's collection of historical documents. The printed document in the photograph is an original decree establishing Los Angeles as the new capital of the Mexican territory of Alta California. It is signed by then Secretary of the State, Jose Maria Gutierrez de Estrada, on behalf of the interim president of Mexico, Miguel Barragan. The names of other persons, printed in the decree, include: Basilio Arillaga, Deputy President; Antonio Pacheco Leal, President of the Senate; Demetrio del Castillo, Deputy Secretary; and Manuel Miranda, Secretary of the Senate. It is dated May 23, 1935.

Louise Peete was convicted on Feb. 5, 1921 of first-degree murder in the death of Jacob Denton. She served 18 years in San Quentin before being released. In 1945 she was convicted of a second murder, this time of Margaret Logan, a wealthy woman who had supported Peete while she was in prison. For the second murder she was given the death penalty, and in 1947 became the second woman to be executed in California.
