Switchboard controlling Wirephoto's network of telephone lines used to transmit photographic images, Los Angeles, 1935

Description:
One of several related photographs housed in this negative sleeve that document the process of phototelegraphy -the process of transmitting photographic images over telephone wire. Though there were advancements - namely the Telediagraph, the Belinograph, and the Telephotograver (invented by Los Angeles Times managing editor Ralph Trueblood) – the technology left much room for improvement. In the 1930s, the Associated Press began working with Kodak to create a machine that could transmit quality images over wire networks. On January 1, 1935, the AP sent the first photograph out over its Wirephoto service to 47 affiliated newspapers across the United States. The Los Angeles Times documented their contribution to photojournalism while touting the latest innovation in a related article.

Men with shovels clearing mud from a street after a catastrophic mudslide, La Crescenta-Montrose, 1934

Description:
In November 1933, wildfires raged through the San Gabriel Mountains above the Crescenta Valley. Two floods followed the next year. In late December, a series of storms dropped 12 inches of rain. On New Year's Eve, heavy rains led to sporadic flooding. Around midnight, mountain hillsides collapsed sending millions of tons of mud into the Crescenta Valley neighborhoods below. More than 400 homes were destroyed in La Cañada, La Crescenta, Montrose and Tujunga. Scores of people were killed, and hundreds were left homeless. Another rainstorm on October 17 caused additional flooding and damage, but no deaths.

Description:
William F. Gettle, Beverly Hills millionaire, was kidnapped from the grounds of his Arcadia ranch home during a housewarming party on the eve of May 9th. The kidnapping attracted a great deal of attention in the community, with Mrs. Gettle even addressing the kidnappers through the pages of the Los Angeles Times. The kidnappers demanded a $60,000 ransom for the return of Gettle, which Mrs. Gettle agreed to pay. However, before the ransom was paid, two detectives of the LAPD, Chester Burris and H.P. Gearhardt, broke the case after installing a dictaphone in the home of a bank robbery suspect. Information from the dictaphone led them to a La Crescenta home where Gettle was held. He was returned, unharmed, to his family on the eve of May 14th.

Hale Sparks, Sam Burnham and Solomon Laykin, witnesses for the prosecution in the Hickman kidnapping and murder trial, Los Angeles, 1928

Description:
The young men were former schoolmates of William Edward Hickman, confessed kidnapper and murderer of Marion Parker, age 12. Both Hale Sparks and Sam Burnham attended Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri, where William Hickman lived prior to Parker's murder. Solomon Laykin attended Los Angeles High School with Hickman when he lived in California. Hickman was sentenced to death after a 13-day trial. He was executed at San Quentin, October 19, 1928.

Louis R. Payne, convicted murderer, Los Angeles, 1934-1935

Description:
In early June, 1934, police officers discovered the bodies of Carrie L. Payne, 45, and Robert Payne, 15, at their Westwood home. They had been brutally murdered by Louis R. Payne, their respective son and brother, in late May. Payne was arrested several days after he committed the crime and after confessing at a Huntington Beach police station. In January, 1935 he plead insanity and was sent to a sanitarium.

The Long Beach earthquake of 1933 took place on March 10, with a magnitude of 6.4, causing widespread damage to buildings throughout Southern California. The epicenter was offshore, southeast of Long Beach on the Newport-Inglewood Fault. An estimated fifty million dollars' worth of property damage resulted, and 120 lives were lost.
