Robert S. James standing between two unidentified men in court. He was most likely testifying in his own defense for the murder trial of his wife Mary Emma James. He purportedly had an affair with his niece, which spurred him to tie down his wife and have a rattlesnake bite her, and then later drown her in their fish pond. He was supposedly helped by his friend, ex-sailor Charles H. Hope, who was also charged with murder.

The 1923 City Hall was located was located in the middle of Pacific Avenue, at Broadway. Designed by W. Horace Austin and his former partner, civil engineer Harvey H. Lochridge, the building sustained damage in the 1933 earthquake. It was remodeled by Cecil Schilling and engineer C. D. Walles in 1934 in the modern art deco style.

Chief Luther Standing Bear in jail, 1935

Description:
Luther Standing Bear, aka Ota Kte (meaning Plenty Kill) or Mochunozhin, was a Native American writer and actor. Although Standing Bear achieved many successes by American standards, including becoming a member of the Actor's Guild of Hollywood, the plight of his people remained foremost in his mind. The Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890 was particularly disturbing to him. Standing Bear published books during his lifetime to educate the public about Native American and Lakota culture and government policies toward his people. These included My People the Sioux (1928), Land of the Spotted Eagle (1933), and Stories of the Sioux (1934). In 1939, he died of the flu while on the set of the film Union Pacific. He is buried in Los Angeles, California's Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

He was supposedly helped by his friend, ex-sailor Charles H. Hope, who was also charged with murder.

Text reads, in part: Los Angeles, Dec. 13, 1920, 2:30 a.m. Capt. Charles R. Moffatt, Commanding Detective Bureau. Sir: At 11:30 of Dec. 12 -- or tonight -- I was told by Paul J. Braud, a reporter for the Los Angeles Examiner, that if I went to the Examiner office I would be given some valuable information concerning the murder of an unidentified woman found in the eucalyptus grove at Edendale earlier in the day. ... I saw on a table a large amount of jewelry, a large leather folder, a suitcase (leather), a pile of women's clothing, two magazines and some papers, a thermometer and some collar buttons, etc. ... I asked [the reporters] to take me out to the place where they had found these things ... All of this stuff I have filed with the property clerk under my name so that it will be at hand for the officers investigating the case this morning. ... Respectfully, J F Bean.
