Text reads, in part: $500 Reward. Knoxville, Tenn., August 4, 1920. A reward of $500 has been offered for the arrest of MAUDE MOORE, formerly of Knoxville, Tenn., now under indictment in the criminal court of Knox County, Tenn., charged with murder in the first degree, for killing LeRoy D. Harth, a Knoxville automobile dealer, September 8th, 1919, on a highway in said County, for the alleged purpose of robbery, the killing occurring in the night time. ... In connection with the same crime, one Martin Hunter was also indicted as an accessory after the fact. ... a reward of Fifty Dollars ($50.00) for the arrest of said Martin Hunter. ... Ed. M. Note with partial ransom instructions, on 2 pieces of paper, mostly typewritten, partially created with cut-out words and letters, some portions obscured with tape or paper, some words struck out with crayon or pencil, pinned to wooden background, reading: -Leave 5:30. P. M. - continuing through HIGHLAND PARK a nd past SYCAMORE GROVE PARK to AVENUE #43 (forty-three); turning to the left on AVENUE 43 and going up the hill to GRIFFIN AVENUE and turning to the left on car line and following to the end of line. Here you will see the road turns to the right and starts up the winding road to the top of the hill. This is where Montecito Drive starts. Follow this road all the way up the hill. You will notice a retaining wall on the left about 8 feet high, this will follow along all the way to the top on your left hand side. Do not turn off this road. Just follow the winding road all the way. Keeping the wall on your left. Go all the way to the top following the wall all the time. When you arrive upon the hill you will see that the wall continues on for a short distance, but you follow on around the wall and and the end of it At Curve On The Right notice instruction under TILE in under Box. This is the place where you will stop your car and be sure there is no one following you or around there or anyone coming towards you You should act as if you are looking at your tires or something so as to not create suspicion or let anyone know that you are there. You see it is necessary that you are careful of this money so no one else might pick it up first. Otherwise you would be out of the money and the wife too. But you can be careful in placing it. We will try our best to get it. After placing the money then you drive on around the road to the first road turning to the right down the hill. This will take you down the other side of the hill to BROADWAY then you can turn and get back. This is a complete worded map and should be easily followed. We are depending on you to follow it in every detail and move and hope that you understand the seriousness of it all if you do not do as we direct. We have the upper hand at this time and we intend to see that you do as your told. Chief Luther Standing Bear in jail, 1935

Description:
Luther Standing Bear, aka Ota Kte (meaning Plenty Kill) or Mochunozhin, was a Native American writer and actor. Although Standing Bear achieved many successes by American standards, including becoming a member of the Actor's Guild of Hollywood, the plight of his people remained foremost in his mind. The Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890 was particularly disturbing to him. Standing Bear published books during his lifetime to educate the public about Native American and Lakota culture and government policies toward his people. These included My People the Sioux (1928), Land of the Spotted Eagle (1933), and Stories of the Sioux (1934). In 1939, he died of the flu while on the set of the film Union Pacific. He is buried in Los Angeles, California's Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
