Description:: Financier F.W. Leistikow, who, along with his wife Esther E. Leistikow and 17 others, will benefit from a settlement with the County Counsel’s Department after claiming that the county illegally collected taxes on luxury homes in 1939, 1940, and 1941. The claims totaled $32,171.35 and, although the Counsel did not admit wrongdoing, they realized it would be more difficult to protest and decided to pay 62.5% of that amount, equal to $20,117.72

Description:: Will E. MacFaden (1913-1992) and Robert W. Kenny (1901-1976), pose together as two of California's youngest judges. William E. MacFaden (1913-1992) became the youngest judge in the state of California when he was sworn in as Redondo Beach city judge on July 1934.Robert W. Kenny was a former reporter and one of the youngest judges selected to serve as a Superior Court Judge in Los Angeles. He was appointed on December 6, 1932. He later served as the 21st Attorney General of California.

Description:: George Wallace (alias Robert M. Nixon) with U.S. Marshal William S. Sweeney. Wallace is accused of blackmailing lawyer and horse owner Neil S. McCarthy. McCarthy received four letters, allegedly from Wallace, threatening to maim his race horses with poisoned-needle darts if he didn’t pay up. Wallace testified that he had written the letters, but he had been acting on behalf of a gang of “tough eggs” that were behind the scheme.

Description:: Dick Russell signing the speeding ticket he received from police officer Dick Barlow during a planned race between an automobile and a bus. The race was part of a "Don't be April fools, obey Traffic rules" campaign to prove that safe driving always prospers. Russell sped and disobeyed traffic laws in the automobile and almost beat safe driver Frank Lampley's bus full of Chamber of Commerce ladies, until the officer intervened. Russell is holding the Dunce cap he was obliged to wear after the exercise.

Description:: Meeting of a joint legislative committee composed of seven Senators and eight Assemblymen, which was appointed to investigate policies and practices of the State Relief Administration. Senator John J. Phillips (back 4th from left) was elected chairman and Assemblywoman Jeanette E. Daley (back 3rd from left) was elected vice-chairman. Some topics discussed at the hearing included S.R.A. funding of crossing guards, the transfer of S.R.A. headquarters from San Francisco to Los Angeles, how the S.R.A. leases quarters, and financial conditions, including the controversial 40% cut of relief checks. This last point drew picketers from the Workers Alliance, who marched outside the State Building during the committee’s S.R.A. hearings.
