Spectators watch as a fireman hoses down flames from a forest fire in Glendale's Verdugo Woodlands and Rossmoyne sections. 2500 acres burned but the firemen were able to keep the blaze from damaging any of the nearby homes. Firemen battled the flames for ten hours and dealt with high winds, which made the situation more dangerous

Ashcraft measuring the beak of a bird specimen brought back by a team of University of Southern California scientists from their exploration of the Gulf of Lower California on U.S.C.’s Velero III cruiser. The expedition was captained by Allan Hancock, president of the U.S.C. board of trustees, and included a team of three zoologists, an ornithologist (Ashcraft), a botanist, an ichthyologist, a parasitologist, a scientific artist, a photographer, a collector, and an official observer for the Mexican government. The team brought back several thousands of specimens including birds, fish, mammals, algae, and parasites.

Men working at night to repair damage from the Elysian Park landslide. The landslide started near the top of Buena Vista Peak as a small crack in the earth. The crack began separating around November 15, 1937 at a rate of about half an inch every 24 hours, then became a meandering zig-zag, and finally a landslide on November 26, 1937. During the landslide 1,500,000 tons of loose rock and dirt tumbled down the hill and onto a 600 foot stretch of Riverside Drive. The disaster caused rerouting of traffic and attracted thousands of spectators. Because the initial crack was identified early, damage and injuries were largely avoided

Description:
Man stands in front of the wreckage of Berth 153, a terminal in L.A. Harbor that was destroyed when the Markay, an oil tanker owned by the Keystone Tankship Corp., exploded in the wee hours of the morning. The fire was fed by leaking gasoline and threatened at least five terminals in the harbor. At least 22 were injured and 9, possibly 12, people were killed. Damage was estimated at $10,000,000.
