Description:
Photograph of 2 fellow servicemen of H. H. West, Jr.'s posing outside of their quarters while stationed at Fort Mears in Dutch Harbor. The duo poses at center standing on a wood plank that passes in front of the barracks. To the right of the men, another planked walkway extends perpendicularly from it and stretches back towards the barracks. The Quonset hut-style barracks stands off-center to the right, extending out-of-frame. A Dutch door in the center of the building is open at top. Three more servicemen stand behind it and look to the camera. A window sits to the right of the door. On the window's frame, a number plate reads, "24." To the left of the building, a blanket lies atop shrubbery and in the distance, a hillside rises.

Both Longstreet men stand with their hands behind their backs. Luellen Pawley wraps an arm around her sister's shoulder. The Pawley residence is obscured by shrubbery growing along the right edge. The front walkway and yard extend towards the left. Maple Avenue enters frame in the background at left.

Per the negative sleeve caption, this photograph was taken in 1910, the same year that Chester Schmitz was born. He looks considerably older than that, maybe about 5 or 6, in this photograph. The other children also look older than what their age would be in 1910. It is more likely that this image was taken around 1915.

H. and Mertie West on North Ridgewood Place. The Wests lived at 830 North Ridgewood Place and the Bacons, Newquists and Robinsons lived at 836, 832 1/2 and 832 North Ridgewood Place, respectively.
