Description:
Photograph of 2 uniformed servicemen standing in front of their quarters while stationed at Dutch Harbor during World War II. A walkway of wooden slats enters frame from the lower left corner and stretches through the image on an upward angle towards the right. It then extends back to the left towards the front door of the Quonset hut-style barracks. Two servicemen stand on the walkway in front of and running parallel to the barracks. They stand side-by-side at center and look to the camera while dressed in uniform. The front of the barracks stands behind and to the left of them. It is viewed at an angle from the front and faces right. Snow-covered mountains rise in the distance at right.

The two men look to the camera as they stand side-by-side at center on the concrete walkway that cuts through the front lawn. Arthur Crowell places a hand in his pocket and J. E. Smith stands with his hands behind his back. The walkway stretches on a slight upward angle beneath them from the lower left corner to the right. J. E.'s front lawn extends behind and to the left of the 2 men. A short palm tree stands at the edge of the yard behind Arthur, abutting a neighbor's fence. The sidewalk and South Eastlake Avenue pass through the image at right on an upward angle from right to left, running perpendicular to the walkway. Directly behind Arthur and J. E., South Eastlake and Darwin Avenues intersect. Neighboring houses are visible lining Darwin Avenue in the background at right.

Description:
According to the negative sleeve for this set, these photographs are of the San Diego Fair, about 1912. The buildings in some of the photographs were not built until 1915. It is more likely that these images are were taken in 1915. In 1915 and through 1916, San Diego hosted the Panama-California Exposition, for which many of the buildings in the photographs were built. The photographs most likely document this event.

A walkway of wooden slats enters frame from the bottom edge at center and stretches through the image on an upward angle towards the right. It then extends back to the left towards the front door of the Quonset hut-style barracks. Four servicemen stand on the steps and walkway leading up to barrack's door. A man in uniform stands on the walkway at center and looks to the camera. Behind and to the left of him, another man wearing a heavy coat faces the camera, but looks down towards his hand which holds a cigarette. On the topmost step in front of the door and to the left him, 2 more men stand. The leftmost man shields his eyes as he looks to the left. Another man peeks from behind and to the right of him while resting his foot on wooden post. The front of the barracks stands behind and to the left of the group. It is viewed at an angle from the front; it faces right. Snow-covered mountains rise in the distance at center and right.
