Aldous and Laura Huxley Papers, 1925-2007

Description:
Aldous Leonard Huxley (1894-1963) was a prolific writer of novels, essays, poetry, criticism, and screenplays. The Aldous Huxley Papers portion of the collection consists correspondence between Aldous Huxley and publishers Harper & Row, personal correspondence, holographic notes, literary manuscripts and personal effects. Laura Archera Huxley (1911-2007) was a musician, author, psychological counselor and lecturer. The materials in the collection that comprise the personal papers of Laura Archer Huxley include personal correspondence, holographic and typewritten notes, manuscripts, collected articles and clippings and interviews. As well, there are photographs and audiovisual recordings of both Aldous Huxley and Laura Archera Huxley.

Description:
Inset map shows Reseda Boulevard intersecting with Sunset Boulevard. According to Los Angeles Times, March 20, 1998, "Crossroads of Confusion," a plan to extend Reseda to Sunset and the Santa Monica area began in the 1920s and was scrapped in 1977. Some city maps incorrectly show an intersection between Reseda and Sunset.

Description:
Below the landscaping plan there is also a distant perspective view of the cutting garden. The house on the property was probably designed by the architecture firm of Webber, Stanton and Spaulding. It was constructed in 1927 by the firm Chisholm, Fortine & Meikle, Architecture, Engineering & Construction. The house was featured in Architectural Digest in 1928. The date for the cutting garden is from the nitrate negative sleeves for the photographic images.

Wright Saltus Ludington residence, hedges and trees surrounding oval reflecting pool, Montecito, 1931

Description:
The Ludington estate, also known as Val Verde, Dias Felices, the Henry Dater house, and the Dr. Warren Austin home was designed by the architect Bertram Grovenor Goodhue, constructed in 1918 and then purchased by Charles H. Ludington in 1924. His son, Wright Saltus Ludington (who inherited the estate in 1927 or 1930), engaged the landscape architect Lockwood de Forest to design the gardens in 1925. Retaining the geometry of Goodhue's design and much of the wilderness, Lockwood transformed the gardens over a period of twenty-three years.
