Bertrand wears a sheer white dress and veil draped over her head and shoulders - the veil secured by an elaborate band evoking an Egyptian crown. Bertrand sits on the floor striking a far way look, hands clasped over her heart. She is back lit for dramatic effect. An urn sits on an elaborately carved pedestal at left. Curtains and an Oriental tapestry embroidered with floral designs hang in the background.

The city directory lists her as a dramatics teacher with Fern Severance (a drama, music and voice teacher). Severance resided (and most likely taught lessons) at 73 Market Street in Venice, the address of the building in this photograph. The building still stands at Market Street and Pacific Avenue. Its original brick façade has been maintained.

A furniture store sits to the right of the entry, with furnishings on display behind its windows. A “For Sale” sign hangs above a shuttered store front to the right of the store. No addresses or store names can be viewed on the two-story brick building. Two 1930s era cars are parked along the adjacent curb, while a third car is viewed across the street at right. Additional businesses can be seen along Trolley Way (now Pacific Avenue), one marked with address number 1424. Pacific Electric cable car lines can be viewed overhead attached to utility poles seen along the street.
