Sodi burra, a 1-string stick zither with a resonator, a fortune telling instrument. The danda (neck) is of bamboo, the tuning peg is of wood, the string is attached to a nail, and the resonator is of dried pumpkin gourd. Instrument of the Yerukala (Parigamuggula Erukula) people (?). Possession of the Tribal Cultural Research and Training Institute.

Description:
The image in front of the altar’s first alcove is a statue of Nandi, the bull, Lord Siva’s mount. In the altar alcove (left): a Shiva lingam (phallus, symbol of creator Lord Shiva) and yoni (vagina, symbol of Mother Goddess), under a brass pot continuously giving abhishekhi (worship with a substance such as water) to the lingam. In the altar alcove (right): Lord Ganesh, god of beginnings and remover of obstacles, with an elephant’s head, and a human body. There are no images of Lord Rama, an incarnation or Lord Vishnu.

Description:
Banjara women dancing and singing. Six women dance (a welcome song for marriage?) with raised arms, bedecked with white bangles. They wear large nose rings, toe rings, and elaborate necklaces. Their long cholīs (blouse) gāgrās (ankle-length full skirts) and oṛhnīs (shawl worn over head, one end tucked into waist) are decorated with needlework, coins, and mirror work. The headman, Gajā, plays a daf for their song. Other men had left for work in fields. Huts and a thatch-roof cowshed are visible in the background. The village is 17 miles from Hyderabad.

Sarasvatī vīṇā Tanjore. L 52”. Named for Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge and the Arts. It is carved from a single piece of wood. It has twenty-one bronze fret bars (mettu) attached to the fingerboard (danda) in a beeswax mounting. Five strings are attached. It is highly decorated with white inlays. It does not appear to have a sound hole (nada randhra) in the soundboard. An extra resonator (sarrokai) is attached beneath the face of the dragon (yali).
