Description:
View of the Ada E. Bowers Memorial Fountain in the courtyard of the Bowers Museum, with a statue of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, discoverer of California, and bas-relief scenes behind the statue and along the base of the fountain. To the left of Cabrillo is a rocky formation from which water issues. Behind Cabrillo are 3 scenes including Cabrillo and companions facing Indians on the sea shore with a ship in the ocean in the distance, a mission church, and Indians in a wooden carat (carretta) drawn by oxen. At the base are 8 bas-relief scenes apparently depicting episodes from the mission era and later settlement by ranchers and farmers. A plaque in the center bears the text "Mrs. Bowers Memorial Fountain."

Photograph is page from book, caption from photograph reads "THE ALTAR OF THE SACRED JADE PAGODA--A glorious, priceless masterpiece. 'Tis not a replica but an ideal combination of the most outstanding features of Chinese architecture. For 10 years 150 craftsmen labored to create it from a mother gem weighing 9 tons. Ornate 1888 horse-shoe-shaped shell art wreath made by poet Ina Donna Coolbrith in upper left corner. In upper right corner is a portrait of Ina Donna Coolbrith which is the frontispiece of her book Songs from the Golden Gate, 1895. The lower portion of the page is an article discussing In Coolbrith making the wreath ["Heirloom Shows Poetess' Art," Los Angeles Times, October 12, 1953]. At the time of this photograph the wreath belonged to the Perrys' nephew John H. Crum of Santa Monica. The shell wreath is an example of Victorian era domestic crafts.

A garland of holly can be seen in the top of the photo, while people walk the crosswalk in the foreground. The building is still there (as of 2013), heavily altered but with the relief frieze still visible.
