Woman in the patio of El Mirasol Hotel, Santa Barbara, 1941

Description:
El Mirasol began as a mansion built by Mary Herter, the mother of the artist Albert Herter. After his mother's death, Herter renovated the mansion and converted it into a boutique hotel. The hotel was purchased by Charles B. Hervey from John B. Quigley in 1941. The city block site of the former El Mirasol Hotel was dedicated as Alice Keck Park in 1980. The block is bounded by Santa Barbara, Micheltorena, Garden, and Arrellaga Streets

Description:
Photograph of a woman seated near the edge of a Palisades Park cliff. Two large palm trees stand nearby on the right. The cliffs continue across from the woman at left, with a wooden rail fence and trees in view. View faces south towards a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway (California Highway 1), with cars lining the road and parked in lots near what are presumably beach homes, clubs and businesses. These structures follow along the Highway and beach- the beach populated by crowds on the sand and in the water. At center sits the Santa Monica Pier and Yacht Harbor, marked by several buildings and numerous nearby ships. A large building and several other structures line its pier. Beyond the pier, the coastline continues into the distance. Photographed at the foot of Montana Avenue, above the Sorrento Beach Club.

Description:
This is a photograph taken during a formal dedication to the public of the Will Rogers State Beach Park. The tribute was attended by several personalities. A crowd has gathered around the pedestal, on which are seated all the guests of the event, and where Geoffrey Morgan, Master of Ceremonies is speaking. In the background, the beach is dotted with several people sunbathing. A board behind reads, "Will Rogers State Beach, State of California. Dept. Natural Resources, Division of Beaches & Parks." There is also a large section of a tree trunk, with the label, "Will Rogers State Beach, California Big Tree."

West (H. H.) Collection

Description:
Henry Hebard West was a Los Angeles resident, Southern Pacific Railroad employee, and candid photographer. His photograph album contains images of Los Angeles and vicinity, but also includes many photos of travels to Northern California, the Midwest, and New England. Most of the photos are portraits of the West family in Los Angeles, where they lived at 240 S. Griffin Avenue, in a house built by the photographer's father. The photos provide a first-hand look at the architecture, interior decoration, furniture, clothing, hair styles, and transportation of the period. They document the life of the West family over a span of forty years, as they age, marry, raise children, enjoy outings to nearby city parks, beaches, hotels, and missions, and vacation together in Northern California, returning again and again to places like Yosemite, Silver Lake, Gem Lake, June Lake, Convict Lake, and Minnelusa to camp; sled; hike; trout fish; and hunt deer, rabbits, doves, and sage hens.
