Roland Hayes, 1920s-1930s

Description:
Roland Hayes was an American lyric tenor and composer. In 1915 Hayes premiered in New York City in concerts presented by the orchestra leader Walter F. Craig. Hayes performed his own musical arrangements in recitals from 1916 to 1919, touring from coast to coast. He recorded with Columbia in 1939. Hayes continued to perform until the age of 85.

Ralph Bunche, circa 1922-1930

Description:
Ralph Johnson Bunche was an American political scientist, academic, and diplomat who received the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for his late 1940s mediation in Israel. He was the first African American to be so honored in the history of the prize. He was involved in the formation and administration of the United Nations. In 1963, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President John F. Kennedy. [Wikipedia]

Description:
This image appears with article "Printing Official to Retire: Senaca Beach Tomorrow Steps Down from Job in Open-Shop Organization," Los Angeles Times, 30 Sep. 1929: A6. Senaca C. Beach began his long career in printing and publishing in Oregon. He served in county government in Oregon as well as organizing for printers' unions nationally. In 1905, he was persuaded by Los Angeles-based printers to perfect a trade organization in Los Angeles. He moved to California and helped organize the Printing Board of Trade. He long served as executive secretary of the organization, a division of the Merchants' and Manufacturers' Association.

Both Western Union employees, Helen Seelye identified one of the two telegrams sent to Marion Parker's father; and Ina Branson identified Hickman as the man who sent the kidnap telegrams.

Description:
Photograph of Charles C. Cohan who served as Los Angeles Times' Real Estate editor from 1932 to 1959, until his retirement. Before coming to LA, he served as a reporter and editor for the Butte Miner in Montana, during which he co-wrote the state song of Montana, "Montana." He was also designated "Dean of California Real Estate Editors" in 1951 by members of the California Real Estate Association.

Photograph of Times employee Earl E. Craven. Mr. Craven was an employee of the Los Angeles Times from 1923 to 1956 (his death), rising through the ranks from assistant telegraph editor to being the assistant managing editor. In the years that he covered the night shift as the news editor and assistant managing editor, Mr. Craven was largely responsible for the make up of the Times' home edition. He also conducted a weekly broadcast on Times programs.
