Dave Sickmon, who appears in an account of the 1853 Butler Train to Oregon, photograph copied in 1939

Description:
George Miller West travelled with the Butler (wagon) Train, (organized by the Butler family, members of the Disciples of Christ Church) from Monmouth, Illinois to Polk County, Oregon in 1853. West made the journey to mine in Oregon and California. He wrote a memoir relating incidents of crossing the plains to Oregon and his experiences in the goldfields of southern Oregon and northern California. The memoir was prepared in the form of a 49-page typescript by his son, H. H. West, who distributed the memoir to several libraries and archives, along with copied photographs of members of the Butler Train and one or two mining associates. The photographs were collected by H. H. West from about 1935 to 1942. Dave Sickmon is mentioned in the memoir.

Photograph of James A. Day looking over paperwork while sitting in his office at the Southern Pacific Railroad depot on the corner of Fifth and Central Avenues. He is viewed from a slight bird's-eye view. His desk enters frame from the lower left corner and extends towards the center of the image. Paperwork lies strewn across the desk. James A. Day sits behind his desk at center and looks down at some papers he holds in his hands. The corner of his office stands behind him to the right. Along the right back wall and next to the corner, a filing cabinet stands. A clipboard hangs to the right of it from the chair rail. To the right of James, a typewriter sits atop a small, low table. The left wall appears to be windowed, but the windows are opaque. Next to James at left and along the left edge, 3 telephones stand on a small table. Behind them, a calendar is flipped to "10 FEB." A board hangs to the left of it and the wall extends towards the center, abutting the right wall.

Ivan Harold Browning, 1920-1950

Description:
Ivan Browning was an African American entertainer known for his singing, and acting. He was the lead tenor in the Four Harmony Kings signing group. During the 1920s the group traveled throughout Europe. He and his wife, Maurine Moss Browning, lived in England for several years. The Brownings later did a tour in the United States with Maurine accompanying him on the piano.

Bessie Bruington Burke seated at a desk, 1930-1945

Description:
Bessie Bruington Burke is recognized as the first black principal of a Los Angeles public school. She attended Los Angeles State Normal School (now part of UCLA) and earned her teaching credential in 1911. Her education was paid for by the Los Angeles Forum, a political and civic organization founded by African Americans in the early 20th century.
