According to the negative sleeve, this photographic negative was taken in Alexandria, Virginia. The street signs in this image are legible and do not match the geography of Alexandria. They correlate to the geography of Boston, which was also visited by the West's on their "Eastern trip" in October, 1947.
Photograph of Mertie West posing while visiting the Granary Burying Ground in Boston. Mertie West stands in the near distance at center. She faces left but turns her head towards camera. The narrow, stone-paved walkway she stands upon enters frame from the lower left corner and extends on an upward angle to the right. On the near side of the walkway, grave markers stand in a row parallel to the walkway. Behind Mertie, the cemetery grounds sprawl into the distance. Grave stones stand in rows that run perpendicular to the walkway. A tomb rises from the ground, behind and to the right of Mertie. Several trees dot the grounds. In the background, a street and buildings are visible lining the cemetery's back edge.
Photograph, from left to right, of a caretaker and Mertie West conversing on a set of stairs at the Bunker Hill Monument in Boston. They are seen from an elevated angle. Tiered sets of wide steps extend on an angle along the bottom edge. They cascade downward to the right as they stretch into the distance. At center, the caretaker and Mertie West stand one tier below camera and 3 above street-level. Both pause their conversation and look to the camera. The caretaker rests a hand on a broom standing in front of him. A dustpan sits on the landing in front of Mertie. Behind them, a wrought-iron fence enters frame at left, lining the park's edge, and stops at center where it meets the base of the stairs. Beyond the fence and sidewalk, Monument Square runs parallel to the park's edge. Row houses line the far side of the street in the background.
Photograph of Mertie West strolling through a public, open-air market in Boston. A brick-paved road enters frame along the bottom edge and stretches back to the right. Market visitors walk along the road, obscuring it as it stretches into the distance. Mertie West stands in a gap in the crowd at center. She looks to the camera and holds a paper bag in her hand. A man walks towards camera in the foreground near the left edge. Two men stand along the right edge. Other shoppers mill about behind Mertie at center. Beyond the shoppers, a tall building rises. It enters frame at left and stretches towards the right. Along the left side of the building, an awning extends out over the shoppers. On the right half of the building, signage between rows of windows reads, "BATCHELDER & SNYDER COMPANY [...]."
