Citadelle Aerial View

Description:
La Citadelle est non seulement l’élément majeur de l’ensemble architectural du Parc National Historique, mais aussi, pour l’haïtien d’aujourd’hui, le symbole de la liberté et de l’indépendance. Cette impressionnante fortification, en maçonnerie massive, occupe une superficie de près d’un hectare. Elle consiste schématiquement en un vaste quadrilatère irrégulier formé d’un ensemble de quatre corps de bâtiment enserrant la crête du Pic Laferrière, délimitant une cour centrale a deux niveaux, a partie desquels on accède à ces quatre corps de bâtiments. Ceux-ci s’étagent sur huit niveaux. Le plus élevé est celui de la Batterie de la Reine dont les murs culminent à 956 mètres d’altitude.

Citadelle. Installing the Beams of the floor of the wooden superstructure that existed on top of the Batterie Coidavid

Description:
La proue ou "Tour de l'Éperon" nommée Batterie Coidavid d'après le nom de jeune fille de la reine, est visuellement l'élément le plus important et le plus imposant de la Citadelle. Elle est devenue sa signature. Elle a subi d'importants dégâts lors du tremblement de terre de 1842 qui détruisit le Cap-Haïtien. Au fil des ans, des infiltrations d'eau ont causé d'importants dégâts à l'intérieur de la tour. L'une des premières priorités du projet ISPAN/UNESCO était de la protéger. La précédente campagne de restauration de 1954 avait fait quelques progrès dans cet effort de protection en remplaçant certains des linteaux effondrés à l'intérieur de la tour et en coulant une dalle en béton non armé au dernier étage. Avec le temps, la dalle s'est fissurée, ce qui a permis à l'eau de s'accumuler dans le remblai en dessous (voir les sections) causant plus de dégâts. L'une des premières décisions du projet a été de mettre un toit sur la tour pour arrêter les infiltrations d'eau en utilisant les traces du plancher d'origine et de la superstructure en bois.
