Description:
Group gathered following the unveiling of the two murals titled “The Negro in California History” in the lobby of the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company’s new home office building (4261 S. Central Ave.). The murals were painted by artists Hale Woodruff and Charles Alston and installed on the lower walls of the Roman travertine against which the group is standing. Left to right: George Beavers, Jr., chairman of the board, Golden State Mutual; Charlotta Bass, Publisher of the California Eagle, pulled the cord to unveil the Charles Alston Mural; Norman O. Houston, President, Golden State Mutual; Gussie Woods, mother of Hale Woodruff, pulled the cord to unveil the Woodruff mural; and Titus Alexander, member of the California Historical Society who aided in the research upon which the murals are based.

Ralph Johnson Bunche was an American political scientist, academic, and diplomat who received the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for his late 1940s mediation in Israel. He was the first African American to be so honored in the history of the prize. He was involved in the formation and administration of the United Nations. Description:
Elmer Bartlett was a highly acclaimed choir director and organist. Churches where he worked in include the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Los Angeles. He received several awards in the course of his career including first prize for directing the Los Angeles AME's choir at a 1926 choir competition at the Hollywood Bowl. By 1940 he had moved to Elgin Illinois. He continued to direct choirs and play the organ for various A.M.E. churches.

William J. Seymour, preacher of the Azusa St. Church, Los Angeles, 1910-1922

Description:
The Azusa Mission Church played a key role in the Pentecostal movement at the turn of the twenty century. Its founder, William J. Seymour, an African American preacher, presided over the revival meetings and led the development of the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. The first meeting was on April 14, 1906. Worship at 312 Azusa St. was frequent and spontaneous with services going almost around the clock. The services were characterized by spiritual experiences accompanied with testimonies of physical healing, miracles, and speaking in tongues. Along with members of the Holiness Movement, services were attended by Baptists, Mennonites, Quakers, and Presbyterians and by persons of different races. Women held positions of leadership. After 1915, the church went into decline; following Seymour’s death, his wife continued to hold worship services until 1931.

Description:
Robert James Boyd was born in North Carolina. He married Emma P. Barrett in Los Angeles and in 1910 they lived at 1242 El Molino (now 1242 Kenmore Ave.) in Los Angeles, next to 1244 El Molino, where Emma had lived with her family before she was married from as early as 1900. By 1917, he is reported as working in a barbershop in Riverside city directories from 1917 to 1947. According to Miriam Matthews, he owned the barbershop. Robert and Emma had four children: Barrett, Willis, Helen and Edward.
