Inside the Commercial Exchange Building. Most likely related to 1935 construction that removed a 10-foot section in the middle of the building. Building was owned by the Kress House Moving Company and the work was done by architects and engineers Walker & Eisen. Building at 416 W. 8th St (corner Olive Streets), Downtown Los Angeles.

Description:
Side view of a section of the St. Francis Dam, nicknamed "The Tombstone", after the dam collapsed on March 12, 1928. The resulting flood killed over 400 people, and was considered one of the worst civil engineering failures in American history. The dam collapse caused the second greatest loss of life in California history, second only to the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. The St. Francis dam was built between 1924 and 1926 in St. Francisquito Canyon, near present-day Santa Clarita. William Mulholland was the engineer behind the dam's construction, and the dam failed just hours after he had personally given it a safety inspection, effectively ending his career.

Though the Board decided to keep the statue at its location, the statue is currently near Cabrillo Beach, San Pedro.

Description:
Departure pier for water taxis to Tony Cornero's newly refurbished gambling ship, the Bunker Hill (also known as the Lux), which was meant to operate offshore of Los Angeles. After the Bunker Hill’s opening night, however, Cornero and five of his aides were arrested on felony charges of criminal conspiracy to conduct gambling games and serve alcohol without a license. After his arrest, Cornero announced that he was ready to go to the United States Supreme court to keep the Bunker Hill running. Cornero was also “admiral” of the Rex, another gambling vessel which was forced to suspend operations in 1938.

Crowd surveys the former site of the Golden State Fireworks and Display Co. plant, where a fireworks explosion occurred on Feb. 7, 1940. The blast was felt 40 miles away, injured four, and caused damage at many nearby homes. Cause of the explosion was suspected to be decomposing firework shells, or possibly a gopher chewing on powder. Damages was estimated at $100,000

Construction on the grandstand at Santa Anita Park which would enlarge the capacity by 3000 to 5000 seats, Arcadia, 1930s

Description:
Construction on the grandstand at Santa Anita Park. This addition was built at the west end of grandstand and would enlarge the capacity by 3000-5000 seats. The construction was part of a $150,000 plan to improve the park, which also included tunnels built under the track, infield landscaping, and installation of new betting facilities. The improvement plan was announced by Dr. Charles H. Strub, general manager of the Los Angeles Jockey Club on March 5, 1935.

Police Captain Edward Ayres points at the site of an old volcano in Elysian Park. Picture may be associated with the landslide that took place in the park in November of 1937. The landslide began as a small crack in the earth, then widened to a meandering zig-zag, and eventually dumped tons of rock and dirt onto Riverside Drive.

The central panel was removed from the Frank Wiggins Trade School lobby (now LA Trade Tech) and returned to the Public Works Administration in 1935 and the other two panels were returned in 1939.

Description:
Demonstration of relief workers outside the State Capitol showing their opposition to a bill that would provide relief workers with payouts rather than jobs. It was estimated that over half the crowd was from Los Angeles. Oscar Fuss of the Los Angeles Worker's Alliance is addressing the crowd saying, "We have come up here in our old broken-down jalopies to see that that dirty, lousy, stinking relief bill is stopped. Throw it into the sewer, where it belongs.”
