Val Verde resort, Santa Clarita Valley, 1940s
- Description:
- Prominent African American Angelenos, such as Sydney P. Dones, Norman O. Houston, Joe and Charlotta Bass, and others began constructing a black-owned vacation resort for African Americans in 1924 on 1,000 acres in the Santa Clarita Valley, about 50 miles north of Los Angeles. It was originally called Eureka Villa. The community's slogan was "Industry, Education, Pleasure, Religion." Later, community members changed the name of the community back to Val Verde. In 1940, the resort opened its brand new Olympic-sized pool (pictured here), which was partially financed by the WPA. The resort was tremendously popular, nicknamed "The Black Palm Springs."
