Photographed during the first academic year on the Westwood campus, only six structures were present: The Education Building (Moore Hall), Royce Hall, the Library (College Library, subsequently Powell Library), the Chemistry Building (Haines Hall), the Physics-Biology Building (Kinsey Hall, and subsequently the Humanities Building), and the Bridge.

Description:
A rare snowfall covers the Esplanade and Royce Hall, viewed here from the foot of the Physics Biology Building (Humanities Building). The Esplanade is more generally called Royce quadrangle and is known today as Dickson Plaza. The edge of the Library (Powell Library) is visible on the left. Hoover took this photograph in the early morning before the pristine snowfall was disturbed by excited students.

Photographed looking south, the southwestern edge of the recently completed Josiah Royce Hall appears with the Education Building (Moore Hall) still under construction in the background. The west side of Royce Hall was altered in 1984 following the addition of a rehearsal hall and terrace.

The north side of the Library (subsequently known as College Library and, after 1966, the Lawrence Clark Powell Library) is photographed here from the foot of the Chemistry Building (Haines Hall). By the close of the first academic year on the Westwood Campus, landscaping around all of the Esplanade buildings had been completed.
