Houses, cars, about 3 people, and construction debris in foreground, Coca-Cola sign in left middleground on the "De Long" cafe, cars on highway, ocean and hills in background. A sign on the highway next to the cabins reads: "Topanga Beach Auto Camp."

Colorado River, with barges preparing for construction of Parker Dam, near Parker (Arizona), 1934

Description:
In 1934, with plans in place for United States Reclamation Service and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to build Parker Dam on the Colorado River between Arizona and California, Arizona governor Benjamin B. Moeur protested the diversion of water to California by sending members of the Arizona National Guard to the dam construction site. A local ferry service also participated under the informal name of the Arizona Navy.

Bird's-eye view of Santa Monica shoreline, with cliffs at left, Pacific Coast Highway and vehicles in foreground, Spanish-style building complex, with Jesse L. Lasky residence near center, and other buildings in midground, beach, ocean, and Santa Monica Pier in background. On the left side of the Pacific Coast Highway constructed against the cliff is a tall building with the sign "Sorrento Beach" painted on the side; this is probably the Gables hotel, which was never completed and was demolished in the 1970's.
