Description:
Chief James Edgar Davis hands Gloria Swanson, silent film actress, the mortgage to the Bide-A-Wee home for women. Swanson helped Minnie Barton, home founder, pay the mortgage by sending $100 a month for several years. The group gathered to burn the mortgage in celebration of completing payment on the home set up by Barton to help working mothers. Also pictured are Mary Brill, president of the Big Sister League, Superior Judge Georgia Bullock, and Mrs. Robert Ladd Gifford. Minnie Barton was the second woman to join the Los Angeles Police Department and also founded the Barton Home for girls in 1917. Gloria Swanson was an actress best known for her role as Norma Desmond in the film Sunset Boulevard.James E. Davis James Edgar Davis was Los Angeles Chief of Police from 1926–1931 and from 1933-1939.

Famous and influential motion picture producer and co-founder of Paramount Pictures, Jesse L. Lasky, photographed with an older woman, possibly his mother Sarah.Jesse Louis Lasky was born in San Francisco, California in 1880. He began a career as a vaudeville performer in his 20s, which led him to business in Hollywood. In 1913, he founded the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company, with his sister's husband Samuel Goldwyn and close friend Cecil B. DeMille. This company later joined with Adolph Zukor's Famous Players Film Company to release films as Paramount Pictures.

"Prince" Michael Romanoff, popular Hollywood pretender to Russian royal blood, Los Angeles, 1934 (?)

Description:
A photograph of "Prince" (not, as captioned here, "Grand Duke") Michael Romanoff, a Hollywood restaurateur and actor, who claimed to be a member of the Russian royal family. This claim was widely known to be false; however, Romanoff kept up the deception throughout his life in Los Angeles.Romanoff was born Hershel Geguzin in Lithuania. He traveled extensively before settling in Los Angeles and into the role of Michael Romanoff. In Hollywood, he acted on stage and in film, but was perhaps most successful as the owner of the restaurant "Romanoff's" in Beverly Hills. The restaurant was popular for its chocolate souffles, and was frequented by many celebrities. It closed its doors in 1962.

Hubert Castle (a.k.a. Hal Smith or Hal Silvers), wirewalker, prepares for his act at the Shrine Charity Circus. The circus is an annual 10-day event held at Shrine Auditorium, which features an indoor show by the Polack Bros. Circus. Orphaned and underprivileged children are allowed to visit the circus as their admission is paid by affluent members of the community. The circus also travels to the children's hospital to entertain the sick children who can't attend. Proceeds from the circus go to Shrine charitable activities.

Stunt pilot and entrepreneur Paul Mantz poses with one of his airplanes. Mantz received his pilot's license in 1926 while serving with the Army Air Services, after which he pursued a career as a motion pictures stunt pilot, air racing pilot, film aviation consultant, and manager of "United Air Services" and "Paul Mantz Air Services," which contracted pilots and airplanes for the film industry. Paul Mantz also taught pilots, including notable student Amelia Earhart, whom he accompanied on her first (unsuccessful) attempt at flying around the globe.This photograph was likely taken during Mantz's divorce trial from his first wife, Myrtle L. Mantz (nee Harvey), a fellow aviator and former student. They were married in 1932 and divorced in 1936. A "Mrs. Putnam" was named during the divorce hearing, a likely reference to Earhart, who was married to George Palmer Putnam, publisher.

Boys from financially disadvantaged backgrounds participate in a free summer camp in Griffith Park. The camp, which was organized by Sheriff Biscailuz, lasted hosted groups of 100 boys for 10 days at a time. While at camp, the boys participated in activities such as swimming, fencing, baseball, various hobbies, and a nonsectarian religious program. The camp operated from July 6th to September 4th, 1937.

Actor and singer Eddie Cantor, left, and movie producer and mogul Samuel Goldwyn, right. The photo was likely taken in conjunction with a suit brought by Goldwyn against Warner Bros. Pictures, in order to prevent the studio from using dance director and choreographer Busby Berkeley, until Berkeley completed a picture for Goldwyn starring Cantor. Berkeley was under contract to Warner Brothers, but the two studios had an agreement that he would work on two pictures per year for Goldwyn.Cantor testified for Goldwyn in the suit on May 4, 1934.
