Description:: The General Phineas Banning house, built shortly before the Civil War, was an active hub for military and social gatherings. Following the death of General Banning, Hancock Banning became the household head until his own death in 1894. The house remained occupied by the Banning family until 1925. In 1927 the house and grounds were purchased by the City of Los Angeles. In 1934, the Los Angeles Board of Park Commissioners proposed restoring the house, and the Banning family donated many of the original furnishings. Reported in "Society to Assemble at Treasure House of Southern California History: Dedication Planned for Banning Home; Antique Structure to Serve as Museum for Storing Memories of Days of Western Pioneers," Los Angeles Times, 31 May 1936: D1.
