Alvin Ailey was an African-American choreographer and activist who founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City. He is credited with popularizing modern dance and revolutionizing African-American participation in 20th-century concert dance. Ailey studied other art forms, including painting, acting, music, set design, and costuming, as well as ballet and other forms of modern and ethnic dance.

Mary Jane McLeod Bethune was an American educator, stateswoman, philanthropist, humanitarian and civil rights activist best known for starting a private school for African-American students in Daytona Beach, Florida. She also was appointed as a national adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of what was known as his Black Cabinet.

Description:
Betty Hill, dubbed by the Los Angeles Sentinel the "Mother of Negro Political Leaders," founded the Women's Republican Study Club (later the Women's Political Study Club) in Los Angeles in 1929. Her many causes included fighting Jim Crow in Los Angeles hospitals and public swimming pools, abolishing separate civil service lists for African American school teachers, and getting the Board of Education to approve a child care center program. Hill was married to Sgt. Abraham Hill.
