City Councilmembers react to report from National Urban Coalition.

Description:: Reporter Cecilia Pedroza interviews Los Angeles City Council members Joel Wachs, Billy G. Mills, Marvin Braude, Arthur K. Snyder and Edmund D. Edelman following the release of the National Urban Coalition special commission report (1971) by Senator Fred R. Harris (D) of Oklahoma and Mayor John Lindsay of New York. Findings of the report concluded that life in major cities in the United States had deteriorated since the release of the landmark Kerner Report in 1968. The Kerner Report, the end product of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders (known as the Kerner Commission), determined that institutional racism and lack of economic opportunity, amongst other issues were the cause of urban rebellions seen in U.S. cities during the summer of 1967. She interviews two representatives from the Center who are proud to announce an expansion of assistance with financial and food security services for the community, including cashing checks and processing utility payments. The Center will be one of the first non-profit organizations in Southern California to offer such services thanks to efforts from the federal government, the county and their sponsor, Security Pacific National Bank. Due to the limited number of community entities providing such services, this expansion should significantly improve access to vital resources for those in need. Reaction to forced relocation of long-term residents at Veterans Administration domiciliary.

Description:: In January 1972, after the results of a seismic survey determined extensive damage caused by the 1971 Sylmar earthquake, the Wadsworth Hospital, a building on the Veterans Administration site in West Los Angeles, was forced to relocate hundreds of seriously ill patients on short notice. To make room, long-term residents at the site's domiciliary would also need to be relocated. Two women who have been residents at the facility discuss their positive treatment at the hospital and that they understand the decision is being made for the safety of the veterans, but believe the government should have given greater advance notice that they would need to relocate.
