Description:
This collection includes digitized negatives created by field experts and professional photographers during research surveys between 1966 and 1990. The images document heritage buildings in various Indian states (Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, etc) that are decayed, damaged, or inaccessible. Also included are images of rare terracotta sculptures unearthed in excavations conducted at archaeological sites in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Bihar, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Karnataka, and a collection of miniature paintings commissioned by Mughal and Rajput patrons during the 16th to the 19th centuries in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.

Portrait of Balwant Singh of Jammu

Description:
The illustration shows a portrait of Raja Balwant Singh of Jammu. Balwant Singh is dressed in yellow chinese mandarin robe covered with a design of dragons. The Takri inscription in gold on the top reads "Taswir Raja Balwant Singh urandhat dai baratha. Haran agalana" which means "Portrait of Raja Balwant Singh when he was seated on the verandah. The attendant Haran is standing in front."

White-breasted Kingfisher

Description:
The illustration shows a white-breasted Kingfisher. The background of the painting has been painted in peori (deep yellow) which was unusual for Mughal Jahangir period, but its presence indicates the desire to experiment with colours and techniques. The peori has probably been used to signify the intensity of Indian sunlight.

Description:
This is folio 29 from the Lankakanda chapter of the Ramcharit Manas manuscript. The illustration shows Ravana asking demon Kalanemi to make an intrigue against Hanumana (top left); Hanumana taking leave of Rama to bring the medicine (bottom); Hanumana coming to Kalanemi's delusive asrama to drink water, who sends him to a river (center left); in river a she-crocodile captures Hanumana's foot, and is killed by him, while going to heaven she exposes Kalanemi (center right).

Bhisanabhairava Camunda Sakti, Saniharabhairava Mahalaksmi Sakti

Description:
The illustration shows Bhisanabhairava Camunda Sakti (left) - Bhisanabhairava is a form of the Hindu god Shiva, associated with fear and protection. Camunda Sakti, on the other hand, is a form of the Hindu goddess Shakti, associated with death and transformation. The combination of Bhisanabhairava and Camunda Sakti represents the union of the destructive and creative energies in the universe and Saniharabhairava Mahalaksmi Sakti (right) - Saniharabhairava is a form of Lord Shiva associated with the planet Saturn (Sani), which is believed to have a significant influence on human destiny. Mahalakshmi Sakti, on the other hand, is a form of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, who is associated with wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. The combination of Saniharabhairava and Mahalakshmi Sakti represents the union of the energies of Saturn and Lakshmi.

Scenes of Buddha's life

Description:
This first of the three-part illustration shows three episodes from Buddha's life. From left to right, these are - 1. Sambodhi that refers to the enlightenment in Buddhism. 2. Nativity scene shows Queen Maya of Sakya was the birth mother of Gautama Buddha. While the Queen is on her way to her own home for the birth, she stepped down from her palanquin to have a walk under the Sal tree in Lumbini, Nepal. Maya was delighted by the park and gave birth standing while holding onto a sal branch and 3. First Sermon refers to the sermon delivered by the Buddha to his first five disciples at the Deer Park in Sarnath, India, shortly after he achieved enlightenment. He is seen seated in dharmachakramudra or "Setting in Motion the Wheel of Dharma."

King Dabishalim visits sage Bidpai

Description:
The illustration shows the story of King Dabishalim who visits sage Bidpai. King Dabshalim one night had a dream in which he encountered a sage who instructed him to search for a certain treasure which included the fourteen precepts of Hushang. The next morning Dabshalim set off according to the directions given in his dream and finally came to a cave at the foot of a mountain where he met the sage Bidpai.

Indrabhuti and Sudharma

Description:
The illustration shows Indrabhuti and Sudharma who are two figures in Jainism associated with Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. Indrabhuti is believed to have been a spiritual teacher who lived at the same time as Lord Mahavira and Sudharma was the fifth of the eleven Ganadhars of Mahavira.
