Wasiya wa mabanati
- Description:
This poem was written by Ustadh Mau to serve as an advisory piece for women and girls. He was inspired by the Syrian author Ali Al-Tantawi, who had composed the pamhplet ''Ya Binti (Oh, My Daughter)'' ten years prior. Both poems circulated greatly in the Muslim world, especially Ustadh Mau's version along the Kenyan coast. Although the poem by Ustadh Mau is widely known as an utendi, its metre is close to dura al-mandhuma. Wasiya wa mabanati discusses the exploitation and marginalization of women (in particular at the hands of men) and how tragedies such as sexual assault may impact the woman's psyche. The poem focuses on the perspectives of a man impregnating a young woman and abandoning her after. The final stanzas of the poem serve as a greater warning and advice to women and girls, moving away from the singled out woman of the poem, urging them to protect themselves from such tragedies and for society and mankind to better themselves so these things may cease to happen.
