- The county's 150-mile light-rail system went a little further down the line Monday as the first length of track was laid out in a ceremony in Long Beach. The system, which is to begin operating from Long Beach to L.A. in 1990, will feature rails held together by clips, rather than spikes. The rails will sit atop rubber pads, above that in turn will rest on concrete ties.
