Jane Addams co-founded Hull House in 1889 in Chicago with her partner Ellen Gates Starr. This launched her career as a prominent activist and social worker and in 1931 she became the first woman awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She regularly traveled for speaking engagements around the country, though she seldom planned appearances in Southern California.
