- Explosion at Richfield Oil Company's El Segundo oil well. The gas release came without warning and initially caused rock and mud to shoot 200 feet into the air. The friction from this then ignited flames which roared out of the ground for nearly three days before dying out. The explosion caused a volcano-like crater 75 feet across and approximately $100,000 in damage.
