Text reads: Actual photograph, said to be the first released in this country, showing the Turkish court at Brousa, Turkey, April 25, 1928, before Judge Ahmed Nisameddin, when the Misses Lucille Day of Pacific Palisades, Cal., Edith Sanderson, Berkeley, Cal., and M. Jennie Jilson, American girl missionary workers, each were sentenced to serve 3 days in jail and to pay a fine of $13 for alleged teaching of Christianity, contrary to present Turkish religious laws. Left to right, the missionaries are, Miss Day (wearing glasses), Miss Sanderson and Miss Jilson (writing). Judge Nisameddin sentenced the missionaries. Then they appealed to a higher court. After a long period of waiting the case came up before the court of appeals. It decided to retry the case before Judge Nisameddin who immediately reaffirmed the original punishment. Sentence was passed at Constantinople, Sept. 26, 1928, according to an associated dispatch received recently, for teaching religion. Mrs. W. H. Day, Pacific Palisades, Calif., mother of Lucille Day, upon receipt of information covering the reaffirmed sentence said: “The girls really were arrested for pausing in silence with heads bent, before sitting down at the dinner table and for wearing their best dresses on Sunday, when Saturday is the Mohammedan day of rest.” Miss Day is now in Salonica, Greece, teaching at the American school. The Miss Sanderson and Jilson are in Italy and plan to return to the States.
