John W. Hanby was a prison captain, sheriff deputy and jail steward in the Los Angeles justice system in the 1920s and 1930s.
Portrait photograph of Sheriff John W. Hanby in uniform. The badge on his hat is in the form of a shield with a star in the center and surmounted by an eagle and is inscribed "Los Angeles County Sheriff Captain, Captain." The star badge on his jacket reads "Deputy Sheriff, Los Angeles County, Captain, Substation."
