Photographed page from an unidentified publication with illustrations and text providing examples of mining equipment and petroglyphs found in the Mojave Desert area and at Keys Ranch. Text describing illustration at top: "Gold mining and cattle running were the earliest activities of white men in the national monument area, as witness this early, crude stamp mill which contributes to the Zane Grey Western setting at Keys Ranch, formerly a working cattle ranch." [Text below center illustration:] "Even before Americans discovered this area, Mexican miners were crushing ore with crude arrastres built of native stone and motivated by mule or burro or manpower. This is a typical example found in Mojave Desert area, also at Keys Ranch."[Text for final illustration:] Sketches of petroglyphs - ancient rock incised writings -as seen at Coyote Hole, 200 yards from end of road and 50 feet up on wall of canyon. These Indian doodles, usually found at camps, waterholes, and passes, are widespread in Mojave Desert."
Keys Ranch is located within Joshua Tree National Park, San Bernardino County, Twentynine Palms vicinity. The arrastra (Spanish spelling is arrastre) and stamp mill described in the article remains on view to visitors.
