German track star Otto Peltzer practices starts on the track at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
Otto Peltzer, the world record holder at the 880 at the time, was particularly interested in running on the Coliseum track, which he praised as a fast track. Two months after this photograph was taken he ran against local racers and set a new Southern California record. During World War II, Peltzer was imprisoned by the Germans because was gay.
A different photograph of Otto Peltzer taken on the same occasion appears with the photo caption, "Coming and Going; two views of the famous German half-miler. Dr. Otto Von Peltzer, who holds the world's record for the distance and has defeated Edvin Wide and Paavo Nurmi over the 1500-meter route.," Los Angeles Times, 12 Jan. 1928: pg. B1.
