Virginia sits on the witness stand with her hands fidgeting in her lap. The judge leans close to her while the jury sits on the other side of the girl watching her testimony.
Seven-year-old Virginia testified to the court that after witnessing her mother argue with her father's alleged mistress 20-year-old Frances Walker, Gladys Carter shot Frances. Virginia ran from the room and heard a second gunshot behind her, which is believed to have been self-inflicted by her mother, who is recovering and still too weak to testify. Other witnesses in the trial were neighbor Annie Olson, Captain Elmer C. Marty, and Frank L. Walker, father of the victim.
