Description: Photograph of the Yreka jail viewed from across the street. A dirt street passes across the foreground on an upward angle from the lower right corner towards the left and out of frame. On the right, or far side of the road, the jail stands on the street corner. A stone wall encircles the building; a doorway is cut into the middle of the side of the wall that runs parallel to the street. Beyond the stone wall, the brick jail rises and peeks above the wall. It is viewed at an angle from the front and the side; it faces towards the street. A decorative chimney rises from each corner of the roof. The building sits on a street corner. Another street stretches behind the building and a house stands on the far side of the cross street, left-of-center.
Caption: Text from negative sleeve: 1338. Yreka, Calif. 1898. I took father to Yreka, California in 1898 to visit his old mining grounds where he mined in 1859-1865. 1. The Court House or jail at Yreka as it looked when we were there. 2. The original YREKA BAKERY where the miners got their bread, pies and cakes in the late 50's and early 60's. The name spells either backward or forward. 3. 4. 5. Three pictures of George M. West standing by the only log cabin on Greenhorn Creek where he mined. This gulch was once filled with cabins and miners. 6. A very poor film of the foundation of the old cabin built by George M. West and associates about 1859. 6 films
