Description

Typewritten and annotated instructions for a photograph colorist, indicating what colors to use in different areas of the photograph. Bartlett also created a hand-colored sample photograph for the colorist to follow.

Caption

Text: Subject is: Robert (American) College, in the Bosphorus, Constantinople looking south into Asia. Wanted: A general effect not too much detailed coloring, approximately as suggested on 10 inch proof print. Colors: Trees that frame picture; dark green. Foreground: center, field of ripe grain, not too prominent, darker than proof, perhaps. suggest shocks of sheaves standing in field, to relieve blankness contrasted with field of green grain on hill above. Trees on campus: are dark green masses. Buildings: For most part grayish-bluish-green, except at left which are perhaps cream stucco. Tennis courts in center show golden in sunlight. Towers by water’s edge are old brownish yellow (erected year 1452). WATER IS DEEP BOSPHORUS, almost like sample, darker perhaps on offshore. Buildings opposite shore pink and yellow. Forests back of shore include some dark green cypresses, suggest these. Fields on opp. Shore show ripening grain to burnt brown. Hillsides are burnt brown to first horizon. Distant horizon shades into violet – perhaps. Sky is medium blue, but not dark enough to draw interest from DEEP BLUE water. Use plenty of color.
